FDE IN PRACTICE / WORKFLOW STORIES

Education

Turn after-class questions into useful learning feedback

Connect the materials, questions and practice for one course. Students receive hints grounded in their lessons, while teachers can review unresolved questions and decide what to cover next.

The lesson ends, but the class chat keeps filling up

An education provider wants to improve support for one course. Students post questions in a group chat, and teaching assistants search the notes, check the working and ask the teacher for help. Repeated questions take time, while an individual student's unresolved difficulty can disappear into the chat history.

The challenge

Keep answers aligned with the course, and know when to involve a teacher

A problem may have several methods, and students may share only part of their working. The assistant needs to use current course materials, offer step-by-step hints and ask for missing details. Uncertain or disputed answers, and questions a student still finds confusing, need a teacher with the full context.

  1. Start with one class and its support routine

Work with the teacher and assistants to organize notes, examples and common questions by chapter and version. Agree on the style of hints, the limits of the answers and when a teacher should take over. Use representative questions to define acceptance criteria.

  2. Ground each hint in the course materials

Add study support to the existing learning entry point. Reference relevant notes and worked examples, and respond to the student's current step. Limit materials to the appropriate class, ask for missing information and send unresolved questions to a teacher queue.

  3. Use questions to inform the next lesson

Summarize recurring topics and unresolved questions for teacher review. Draft practice around confirmed gaps, with teaching staff approving it before assignment. Pilot with one class and refine both the answers and the handoff rules.

  • An indexed course library and a question set for evaluation
  • A study assistant with lesson references and step-by-step hints
  • A teacher queue with question history and follow-up records
  • Class question summaries and practice drafts for teacher review

How the workflow could change

Existing workflow

  1. Students post in a chat and wait while assistants search for answers.
  2. Teachers need the context explained again when a question is forwarded.
  3. Follow-up lessons rely on impressions from the chat, with practice prepared separately.

Proposed workflow with FDE

  1. Students receive hints linked to the materials for their current course.
  2. Unresolved questions reach teachers with the student's working attached.
  3. Teachers review question summaries, approve practice and plan follow-up explanations.

Expected business value

Less repeated searching

Course references and initial hints can help assistants focus on exceptions. Track time per question and the information staff still need to add.

Smoother teacher handoffs

Keep the question, relevant materials and attempted steps together. Review response time, unresolved queues and repeated handoffs to see where support still stalls.

More focused follow-up teaching

Connect repeated questions to course topics so teachers can choose explanations and exercises. Use teacher judgment and subsequent practice to assess which topics still need attention.

What matters here

Good after-class support responds to student questions and brings the parts that need a teacher back into the lesson.
